The panel bridge from Waagner-Biro constitutes a modular bridge system, easily adaptable to different open spans, carriageway widths and traffic loads by varying the arrangement of the panels. The Waagner-Biro panel bridge uses a single type of panel for all configurations. The panel is made of standard sections welded together to form a truss framework which has a system height of 2.15m and a system length of 3.048m. The main girders of the bridge are formed by connecting several panels with bolts. Standardised cross girders are available in the carriageway widths of 3.15m, 4.20m and 7.35m. The carriageway consists of steel elements with a non-slip surface; a wooden covering on longitudinal steel girders is an alternative.
THE WORLD‘S STRONGEST PANEL BRIDGE Standard panel bridge elements can be used to create rapid and economically sound solutions, even for highly specific applications. This is why Waagner-Biro was awarded the contract to erect panel bridges for the transport of heavy loads during the construction of a power station in Algeria. Rapid delivery and erection of the bridges were essential as the existing bridge infrastructure in Algeria was not designed to take heavy loads of up to 512 tons and - in addition - the delay penalties were an imminent risk as is current practice in the area of power plant construction. A combination of standard panels arranged in rows of 3 next to each other and up to 4 panels high ensured that the bridges had the necessary load-bearing capacity. The panel bridges were erected by incremental launching under the instruction of Waagner-Biro experts. Installation of the longest bridge, which measured 67m, was completed a week faster than the 5-week construction period agreed upon in the contract.
ADVANTAGES • Fast availability (stock item) • Extremely short assembly time • Simple to build • Short training of the personnel • Light individual components • Simple adaptation to different open spans, carriageway widths and traffic loads due to modular construction • High load capacity due to extremely strong steels and a system height of 2.15m • Use of one standard panel • Simplification of logistical procedures • Corrosion protection of all parts by hot dip galvanising
